چکیده

Radiostrontium is foremost among the by-products of nuclear fission presently considered to be hazardous to man because it may be transmitted readily through the food chains leading to man 2 5 s 16. The main source of radiostrontium contamination of the natural environment has been from the fallout debris of nuclear detonations. It is probable that radiostrontium may continue to be dispersed into the natural environment from other sources upon future utilization of nuclear energy. The continued production of radiostrontium has motivated studies of various factors that may inhibit the transfer of strontium through the soil-to-plant phase of the food chain leading to man. Data reported in this paper show some plant species effects and the influence of short-term variation:;; in root temperature, light intensity and photoperiod on Sr90 uptake by crop plants.

Effect of High Calcium Intake on Strontium Metabolism in Man.

Studies carried out with tracer doses of radiostrontium (Sr85) in man have revealed qualitative similarities but quantitative differences in metabolism of strontium and calcium (1-5). The principle of qualitative correlation between urinary excretion of calcium and of radiostrontium has been utilized in investigations of the removal of radiostrontium from man (6). It has been shown that elimina...

The relative retention of strontium and calcium in human bone tissue.

The production of radiostrontium in relatively high yield from fission reactions, together with the aflinity of strontium for bone, have added to the need for a quantitative understanding of the behavior of this element in the food chain leading to human bone. The quantity of this fission product which may be maintained in the bone tissue without perceptible damage to the organism is not well d...

Strontium-90 concentration measurements in human bones and teeth in Greece.

Strontium-90 concentration was measured in human bones and teeth collected in Greece during the period 1992-1996. One hundred and five bone samples, mainly cancellous bone, and 108 samples, taken from a total of 896 individual teeth were processed. Samples were classified according to the age and sex of the donors. Samples were chemically pre-treated according to a specially devised method to e...

Nutritional hazards caused by radioactive contamination of foods.

Isotopes that may contaminate crops Fallout may be made up of a hundred or more active isotopes but only a few of them are likely to be harmful as crop contaminants. Iodine. As 1311, it will be a major hazard for a few weeks after fallout arrives. Chamberlain & Chadwick (1953) showed that iodine gas is deposited on grass by diffusion. Chamberlain, Loutit, Martin & Russell (1955) note that, in f...

Antioxidant Activity, Phenolic and Flavonoid Contents of Echium Species from Different Geographical Locations of Iran

Iranian Echium species (Boraginaceae), popularly known as "Gol-e-Gavzaban" are native plants that some of them have been used widely as food and traditional medicine since long times. In this work organs from different populations of two Iranian Echium species were collected from their natural locations in order to analyze their phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Hydroalcoholic extracts...
